Historical Background

Pergine ValsuganaPergine situated at the beginning of Valsugana was often involved in battles. Ludwig von Brandeburgo in 1356 conquered Pergine and divided it in 7 parts that influenced the development of the neighbourhood.

In the XVI century mineral activity became very important in the "Mocheni" valley. After a recession period in the XVIII century a long reclamation took place in the same marsh situated in the south of the town. Napoleonic, Bavarian and French periods passed. In 1815 Austrians conquered Pergine and founded the Commons. In 1914-1918 Pergine was an area behind the front during the First World War. In 1918 Pergine was put in the Italian Kingdom. After the second World War on 5th May 1945 German occupation ended. In 1955 the actual Pergine Valsugana was born.

Pergine's CastlePergine castle is a cultural and historical center. It rises in the hill of Tegazzo, in a privileged position and was called "Valsugana Key". In the VII century it was changed into a medieval stronghold.

Then the castle belonged to Austrian lords: at first to Margarete Maultasch and then to Emperor Maximilian 1st. In 1531 the castle was in the hands of Bishop Bernardo Clesio. In 1900 Tridentina Church sold it to a German company. Since then there has been a hotel and a restaurant in the castle. It is divided into two parts that are two boundery walls one inside the other. Some important rooms are certainly the Drop prison, Sant. Andrea's chapel, the throne room and the black room with a restaurant. There is a legend that says there is a white lady who comes there every month. There is an exhibition of a famous italian artist held in the castle.
