Sottobosco di Paoli

Where We Are

The seat is in Pergine Valsugana, near the enchanted "Mocheni valley". This valley is also called "Fersina valley", because of the torrent that flows down it. This valley is not very well known by tourists, but one can see here the wonderful power of nature: meadows, woods, brooks, mountains, pastures, malgas, stones, little towns, paths, shelters, lakes, etc...

In this valley inside the Italian Community there are three places in which a particular language is spoken: "mocheno". Many inhabitants of this beautiful valley have German surnames. The first sign of human presence goes up to the Bronze Age. The settlement of the valley was made by Tirol Lords in 1300 and ended in 1400.

The "mocheno" language has always been considered to be different, i.e. "Aleman" or "German". According to scientists this language is similar to the middle-high bavarian language. Thanks to German schools and trade with Germans this language could be maintained.

Usages and customs have been maintained due to the endogamous marriage prohibition. In order to maintain this historical property Mocheno Culture Institute was built; it tries to preserve and transmit this history born in this little and enchanted valley to future generations.

A typical "mocheno" farmstead has been recently restructured and changed into a museum, where you can also visit a copper mine with galleries and wood stairs of 1500.
